School Bullies
About School Bullies
What is it?
Bullying has two key components:
repeated harmful acts and an imbalance of
power. It involves repeated physical, verbal
or psychological attacks or intimidation
directed against a victim who cannot
properly defend him- or herself because of
size or strength, or because the victim is
outnumbered or less psychologically
resilient
Suggested Steps
1. Try to catch it early. If you child indicates
that he/she is being bullied, talk to them
about the details. Try to get specific times
(write them down, but not in front of your
child). If harrassment is through text
messaging, or email, save those message.
Use that to evaluate the severity of the
situation.
3. There may be a particular aspect of your
child's appearance that bullies pick up on.
You might try giving them some ideas. For
example: If your child is getting bullied
because of poor social skills - his shoes are
always untied, he walks with his head
down, shoulders slouched, avoids eye
contact, shirt half tucked in, unclean hair or
body, always biting nails or picking nose -
You can help him/her by teaching them
better social skills.
4. When You also might try a type of
role-playing to see how your child acts
around other kids. This gives you the
opportunity to help your child work out
acceptable responses. (especially if he/she
is being bullied verbally).
5. Consider martial arts training, there are
many good schools that improve
confidence, while reducing the desire to
actually fight. Bullies pick up on a lack of
confidence, just addressing that issue can
alleviate the problem.
6. Here are some other tips.
7. In grade school, ask the principal for a
meeting with the parents of the bully.
8. In high school meet with the principal
and discuss options.
9. Ask the principal about the schools
policies and procedures, and steps for
escalation if the behavior continues.
