Development Calendar

Age 12-18 months

Your child should become increasingly
mobile, however first steps may come
anywhere between 8 and 17 months.  
Child will begin to show defiant behavior,
imitate the behavior of adults and older
children.  Should be able to respond to
simple requests.  If your child has not
spoken by 15 months, or words are not
understandable, there may be a
developmental problem.



Age 18-24 months

This is the age where the child should be
able to walk without assistance. Will play
make believe.  If the child cannot speak
two word sentences there may be a
development problem.

18 months is usually the earliest to begin
potty training.



Age 2-3 years

Should begin to climb (the "terrible twos"),
play games like "ring around the rosy"
though one foot balancing may still be a
problem.   Near the end of the period will
start to turn pages one at a time, and sort
objects by color.   Will use sentences of a
few words.  If your child continually drops
consonents, you may have a development
problem, but stuttering is normal at this
age.

Should be potty trained by 36 months.

Age 4 years

Should be able to go up and down stairs
with no support, draw basic shapes.
Dresses and undresses without assistance.

Age 5 Years

Swings, climbs, jumps, somersaults.  
Counts to 10 or more, say name and
address.  Likes to sing, dance, act.
