Dear Sara,
I am a divorced Mom with a 15 year
old son, Brandon.  We fight about
almost everything.  He seems so
angry and dissatisfied.  He stays in
his room most of the time and when
he comes out, he answers me with
only a word or two.  

He spends his time with video
games and music and sometimes
homework.  He doesn’t have friends
over but apparently keeps in contact
on-line.  I am totally stressed out
between my job and the constant
tension between us.  Is there a way
to get along with Brandon again?

Dear Rebecca,
It is not unusual for teens to be
moody or angry.  They take things
very seriously and are pretty much
self absorbed.  You didn’t say what
exactly that you are at odds about
with Brandon but I would assume that
you have rules that he doesn’t want
to follow.  He is being passive
aggressive by not speaking to you
and is trying to punish you by his lack
of interaction.  He may feel that this is
the only way that he can try to
manipulate you to get his way.

Are your rules the same ones that you
set up for Brandon when he was
younger?  You may be able to
negotiate with him to let him have a
little more freedom.  Other than that,
try to stay consistent with your
discipline and don’t lose your cool.  His
tactics are working if he can make you
angry enough to lose it.

Try not to be negative with Brandon
all of the time.  You surely can find
some positive things to say to him.  If
his attitude improves, notice it. If he
does a good job in some way, let him
know that you appreciate it.  It’s
really difficult for a kid if he never
hears anything good about himself.

It’s  also important for you to do
something good for yourself one in a
while.  Since you are so stressed out,
make a conscious effort to have a
special treat.  A massage is good but
if you don’t feel you can afford it, try a
nice warm bubble bath and try to let
the tension go.  You could also go for
a walk around the neighborhood or
take time out to read a book or
magazine.  When you are under
stress, it’s really easy to scream or be
negative.  Try adjusting your attitude
and maybe Brandon will respond.
