Dear Sara,
My two and ½ year old daughter has
started to take her clothes and
diaper off and wants to run around
naked. We think it has to do with
not wanting a dirty diaper on her
anymore but she’s not potty trained
yet. What should we do?
Dominic
Dear Dominic,
I hope it’s warm where you are! It’s
getting cold here in Kentucky. It’s not
unusual for a toddler to want to shed
their clothes. They don’t have the
inhibitions that we do. In a few years
she will be very reluctant to have
anyone see her naked.
Your daughter could be uncomfortable
in her clothes for some reason. She
could have an allergy to certain
materials or maybe the tags are
scratching her. Look for red places on
her skin to see if this is the problem.
You might want to stick to 100%
cotton and buy clothes that don’t
have tags. If you buy pinafores that
button down the back, she probably
won’t be able to get these off.
If she’s aware that she has a dirty or
wet diaper, she probably is ready for
potty training. Little girls are
sometimes easier to train than little
boys. Two and ½ is a little early but
you might want to give it a try. If she
is willing or able to use the bathroom
you may be able to watch her and
remind her often. (It may be that you’
re the one being trained in this
case.) You could buy some pull up
diapers or pretty training pants to
help things along.
If your daughter isn’t willing or unable
to perform, don’t get stressed out
over it. Just wait a while and try
again.
