Dear Sara,
I have noticed lately that my 10
year old daughter has been blinking
her eyes a lot.  She looks up and
blinks her eyes 5 or 6 times and
then it stops.  Some days she does
this more often and others I don’t
notice it.  She wears glasses and her
eyes have been checked in the last 6
months.  What could be the problem
here?
Rachel

Dear Rachel,
There are several possibilities.   If
your daughter is a nervous,
hyperactive child, she may have
developed a nervous tic.  This is
similar to nail biting and seems to be
a stress reliever.  She will probably
outgrow this problem and it is best
not to call her attention to it. Kids who
have nervous tics like eye blinking
might need to have less pressure on
them.  They do best in a calm
atmosphere.  Also, make sure she is
not staying up at night on her cell
phone or computer.  She needs at
least 8 hours of sleep at night.

Another thing to consider is allergies.
There is a possibility that her eyes are
dry or irritated and she is trying to
clear them.  She could also have a
medication problem.  If she is taking a
medication for Attention- Deficit
/Hyperactivity  Disorder (ADHD) there
is a possibility that if her dosage is
too high that this could cause rapid
eye blinking. So if she is taking Ritalin
or some other medication, be sure to
let her pediatrician know that she has
this problem.  He or she may want to
adjust her dosage.

Your daughter could possibly be
having an absence seizure where she
has an alteration of consciousness for
about 10 to 30 seconds.  This is more
common in kids than adults. She may
not be aware that she is having a
seizure.  If she is having problems at
school there may be times when she
isn’t able to attend to what is going
on because she has had one of these
seizures and this will affect her ability
to do well in school.

Keep an eye on her and take her to
her pediatrician if you suspect any
kind of problem.
