Dear Sara,
My 15 year old daughter Amy has
bad breath.  We have talked about it
and she says she brushes her teeth.
I’m afraid that this will affect her
social life eventually.  She is pretty
and bright and doing well
otherwise.  What can she do to
make this go away?
Carolyn

Dear Carolyn,
If Amy hasn’t been to the dentist for a
while then it’s probably  time for a
checkup there.  You could also
suggest to her that she use dental
floss as well as brushing her teeth.
Food tends to collect between the
teeth and can’t be brushed away and
sits there and rots, causing odor.  She
could also try brushing her tongue to
see if this will help.

If Amy has a lot of allergies, then it’s
possible that the odor isn’t coming
from her mouth.  It could be coming
from infected sinuses or tonsils.  She
could try gargling with salt water or
using a Neti  pot.  A Neti  pot involves
pouring a diluted salt solution into
one side of your nose and letting it
run out of the other side.  It sounds
gross but it could help wash out
infection and allergens.  Some people
have reported benefit from this.
(Walmart carries Neti pots.)

If you try some things and nothing
seems to work then a trip to a doctor’
s office is in order.  There is something
causing this odor.  Amy sounds like a
great girl.  I hope you find the
problem.
