Dear Sara,
I Need Help! We have a 6 year old
who just started school. All of a
sudden he has started to potty in his
pants. Poopy pants are not what a
kindergarten teacher wants to deal
with I am sure but we don’t know
what to do.
I have heard some little boys have
this problem…too busy to come in,
too scared to ask the teacher to go
potty. I’m not sure of the reason.
My husband has bought pull-ups and
has put them on him to prove a
point. I’m not sure that this is the
best thing to do. How do I help him
stop pooping in his pants?
We have gone over and over to
make him see that this is not
acceptable and he gets so upset and
cries. It just breaks my heart. He
does make it to pee, no problem
there, so far any way.

Dear Jessica,
You are right, this is really
heartbreaking to see your son have
to struggle with this problem. Maybe
he is finding the bathroom facilities at
school a little scary and is afraid to go
poop there by himself. You can have
a talk with his teacher but I would
bet that she has had to deal with
similar problems in the past.
I would say that if your son wet his
pants that this could be because he
was too busy or too afraid of the
teacher but it takes a certain amount
of effort to poop unless he has
diarrhea.
I really don’t think pull-ups are a good
idea. He needs to feel like a “big
boy” and not like a baby. Your son
seems upset about this and would
probably welcome a solution .
It may be that his normal time for a
bowel movement is during school
time. One thing that you can consider
is to try to change this. You might
want to talk to his pediatrician first
but you could give him a laxative at
bed time (which would work in the
morning before school) and try to get
him on a new schedule, so that he
could poop before school. Glycerin
suppositories could also be a solution
to help him have a bowel movement
before he leaves home to go to
school. If he does have diarrhea
there are meds for this as well.
Other kids notice when a child smells
bad so you are right to worry about
your son’s social life. So, have some
patience and check with his
pediatrician about getting him on a
new pooping schedule.
