Dear Sara,
Our 2 year old daughter Amy is thin
and tiny. She refuses to eat
sometimes and I worry that she isn’t
getting the proper nutrition. My
husband and I are overweight so
this is a big contrast. What can I do
to make sure that Amy is getting
what she needs?

Dear Andrea,
It’s not unusual for a 2 year old to be
a picky eater. Your best bet is to offer
Amy only healthy foods. Cut out
between meal snacks like candy and
chips so that when you offer fruits ,
vegetables and other nutritious foods
she will be hungry for them. You can
also ask her pediatrician about a
vitamin supplement.
I would encourage you to make an
effort to read up on proper nutrition,
as Amy will develop her eating habits
by copying you. If you are snacking in
front of the T.V. every night on chips
and soft drinks, Amy will assume that
this is the proper thing to do. If she
sees you consuming large amounts of
food at a meal, eventually this will be
the way she deals with food. It
wouldn’t be unusual for her to end up
overweight.
Right now is the time to make some
changes. Start paying attention to
how and what you eat. Write down
what you are eating and tally up the
calorie count. If you are going way
over the number of calories that you
need, then start cutting back. You can
bake or broil instead of fry your meat,
serve your vegetables without cream
sauce and cut back on your portions.
Amy needs good role models to follow
so that she can grow up to be healthy.

whole family will benefit.
