Dear Sara,

My 2 year old son Mitchell has been
diagnosed with autism.  I had heard
of autism but had no idea of how
devastating this could be to my child
and our family.  He is so remote and
won’t interact with us.  We plan to
get him as much help as possible but
I am worried about having other
children.  Was his measles vaccine
the cause of his autism or is there
something else that causes it?
ndrea

Dear Andrea,
This is such a difficult diagnosis to
accept.  Lots of one on one help will
be needed to see that Mitchell gets
along in this world. I hope for the best
for him and your family.

I worked as a volunteer with autistic
children in the early eighties.  This
was not something that was very
well  known  and there were few
children diagnosed with autism back
then.  Then as now there was no
clear idea as to the cause of autism.
Autism is diagnosed from the
symptoms since there is no biological
test.  Research suggests that
interruption or disruption of key
biological processes during
development can lead to lasting
problems and autism arises from
abnormal connections among brain
cells early in development.

The Center for Disease Control data
showed a 57% rise in autism
spectrum disorder in 2006 over a
2002 study that found autism in one
in every 150 children.  There has been
a 400% increase over the last 12
years while the population only rose
by 19%.

The MMR (measles, mumps and
rubella) vaccine was licensed in 1971.
There have been many studies done
and no conclusive connection has
been found to autism.  The benefits
have been significant as measles can
cause mental retardation and death in
children, mumps can cause sterility in
men and if a pregnant Mom contracts
rubella her baby can have congenital
defects.

In the early years autism was blamed
on mothers who did not nurture their
child. It’s now quite clear that this is
not the case.  We are still looking for
something that could be a possible
cause.

What in our environment could cause
the dividing cells of a fetus to go
awry?  There are some families who
have more than one child who is
affected by autism or autistic
spectrum disorder.  This to me
suggests either a genetic problem or
some outside influence on the dividing
cells of Mom’s fetus.

There has certainly been an increase
in air pollution in the last 50 years.  A
pregnant Mom could inhale pollutants
that could affect her baby.  Another
possible problem that has come to
light in the past 2 decades and is
unseen as well is exposure to radio
frequency electromagnetic radiation
from cell phones and cell phone
towers.  Everybody has a cell phone
to their ear.  In the grocery, in the car,
on the sidewalk.  Pregnant Mom
carries her phone in her jacket pocket,
in her shoulder bag on her hip or in
her back jeans pocket.  Nobody wants
to be without their phone.  Children
have their own phones. They may be
more vulnerable because of their
developing nervous systems. How
much more vulnerable  would a
developing fetus be.  Studies have
shown that radiation penetrated
deeper into heads of teenagers and
children resulting in more exposure to
potentially harmful radio waves than
adults.

When we don’t know the cause of
autism it’s easy to speculate and
blame “something.”  The cell phone
mania and the increase in autism
came about at about the same time
so could there be a connection?
Electronics are fun and useful but are
they able to cause cell damage?  I
would be interested to know if
anybody else either agrees or
disagrees with me and why.

Andrea, I know this is probably a lot
of information to process.  It won’t
change what’s already happened.
You know you aren’t to blame just as
those early  mothers  weren’t .  We
still don’t have a clear idea of what
causes autism.  I hope we find it soon.
